Stepping-stone Mandalas

Visionary art, I believe, offers itself as a bridge, acting as a doorway through which we might more easily connect with our true ‘Self’. Personal Stepping-Stone Mandalas are examples of such visionary works and I think of them gratefully as ‘Art drawn from Spirit’.

So, what is a Stepping-Stone Mandala?

Varied and fascinating Stepping-Stone Mandalas are another aspect of my work that I feel honoured to create. These are unique artworks drawn from intuitively-sourced, personalized symbols. During meditation I invite in “The most perfect healing symbols” for the individual (gratitude to Dr Judith Cornell for her amazing work). These symbols create a mandala that holds a very unique and personal pattern that may be used as an insightful and empowering tool of illumination.

Mandalas contain colours and symbols that are often universal in their meaning, but which may also be intensely personal, especially when one contemplates the particular interplay between the various symbols and messages that arise. Often, a message comes through for the recipient either in the form of a quote, such as a line of poetry, as a very brief ‘whisper’ from the Universe, or as additional symbols that choose to remain unseen in the mandala itself, but which wish to be spoken of. Together, these various messages may offer insights or guidance into how that individual may overcome obstacles and achieve heartfelt aspirations.

Intuitive ‘sacred circle’ artworks, Stepping-Stone Mandalas may be used as tools of contemplation, offering us a means of finding our way back to our ‘centre’, our deepest knowing, our Soul Wisdom.

Why ‘Stepping-stone’ Mandalas?

The name ‘Stepping-stone’ Mandalas came to me whilst I was standing at the clothes’-line, which demonstrates that flashes of insight may come to a person at any time.   I felt that it had a nice ’round-ness’ to it, and found it meant: “A raised stone, usually as one of a set in a stream or muddy place to help in crossing (fig.), “Means or stage of progress to an end” (Oxford Dictionary), and “A means of advancement”(Longman Modern English Dictionary). All of those felt right, somehow!

Using your ‘Stepping-stone’ Mandala

Create a space for quiet contemplation. Breathe your way into stillness. Gaze upon your mandala in a relaxed fashion, acknowledge all symbols as they arise, and let them go. Notice any symbols that sought your attention most insistently and ask yourself if they elicit any particular emotion or hold any particular message. Jung noted that the particular placement of symbols within a mandala offered additional clues, with images in the upper portion of a mandala believed to relate to conscious emotions, and those in the lower portion to feelings or thoughts in the subconscious.

As each mandala is individual-specific the symbols will be especially pertinent to that person. We are all, essentially, responsible for our own wellbeing. That, to me, speaks of taking appropriate steps to ensure our own happiness and self-healing. In order to live our lives fully we need to devote some time to ensuring our enjoyment of life, to loving our Self, to truly ‘own’ all that we are, to touch the very centre of our being.

The stepping-stones that I trod along my own path through Life led me to the creation of ‘Stepping-stone’ Mandalas. It is my hope that your ‘Stepping-stone’ Mandala will assist you on the path towards contentment.

I am always drawing the Star of David and butterflies”….”I have just had a picture painted for me and I specifically asked for the butterfly to have blue/green wings- just like the ones you have drawn”…”I also work with crystals and coloured silks when I do my healings”…”The ‘Sun’ I think is my light beginning to shine- I haven’t felt safe in the past to do so, but am now beginning to put myself out there”…”The Soul-mate connection is me and my brother, Jimmy, who was electrocuted when he was 8 and I was 9. He is with me always as my guide, and is the reason I am still alive.”

“As I began my meditation, I sat on the chest at the end of the bed and faced the mantle-piece where the mandala sat. I closed my eyes and visualized the mandala with its’ circle of seven spheres. As I concentrated on re-seeing the picture, each sphere began to move and spin. The spheres became snake-like forms that twisted energetically out of the picture. These seven twisting forms then entered my body at corresponding chakra points, igniting and activating each chakra with bright light. This experience continued for 15 to 20. I found this one of the most enlightening meditations I have practiced. I thank you Linnie for this inspirational mandala, and look forward to its’ inclusion in my meditation practice.”
